Qualcomm, Dialog and TI captured the top three revenue share spots in the Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) market in 2018. Qualcomm dominated with 21.93% revenue share, followed by TI with 5.21% revenue share and Dialog with 4.16% revenue share in 2017.

Power management IC are high-precision products, this industry need a long product development cycle, design requirements, capital investment, complex technology process, with a higher threshold. Therefore, it formed a high degree concentration, monopolized by large semiconductor manufacturers.

The profitability of individual companies depends on their ability to bid accurately, secure contracts, and control costs. Large companies enjoy economies of scale in financing and the ability to offer a broad range of services in many locations. Power management ICs have certainly become very important for the semiconductor industry and smart phone industry at large. There are two trends in the future: One is for lower cost, simple PMICs, many of which are being integrated into their host IC’s package, thus becoming a system-on- chip (SoC) (e.g., entry-level, single-chip cellphone ICs with an integrated PMIC). The other trend is to have more complex PMICs (for higher end stand-alone applications) become part of the chipset of the application.

To capitalize on market opportunities in the new growth cycle, chipmakers need to make fundamental, structural improvements by means of improving research and development, innovative supply chains, transformation of sales force etc., This tends to attract more investments and revenues in the sector.
