The European starch market is developing late. Compared with the corn starch market in China and the United States, the scale gap is obvious. Until the 1970s most of the EU starch which was not made from potatoes was made from imported maize (primarily) and wheat from the United States. With the advent of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy however, the EU became largely self-sufficient in wheat and maize and EU starch today is produced almost exclusively from EU agricultural raw materials. Whilst some wheat and maize starch companies are also agricultural cooperatives, the majority are privately owned.
At present, the European market is basically saturated, the local market has been able to meet the demand, and the import volume is very small, even if the products in the Chinese market have a price advantage. Most markets are dominated by a small number of companies, with ADM occupying the largest market share. More than 25% market share in 2018.
At the same time, we note that corn starch has a market share of less than 50% in the entire European starch market. It has many alternatives, the most important of which are cassava, potato and wheat starch. Its diversified source determines the stability and saturation of the European corn starch market.
With an increase in the demand for various ready to eat food mixes, the demand for corn starch has shot up in the last few years. The genetically modified corn is grown on a larger scale now, making sure that there is ample quantity to supply to various industries. Growing replacement trend of petroleum with ethanol is expected to be the major driving factor over the foreseeable period. Corn starch is a major raw material for ethanol production. One major restraint of the market is the widespread use and availability of tapioca and cassava which now serves as a substitute for corn.
The most important application, the sweetener segment accounts for about 40% of the total consumer market share and may lead in the forecast period. We predict that starch sugar, food and beverages remain a major part of this market. On a geographical basis, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Austria will continue to lead major markets. The European market economy is growing slowly. Will become the main constraint to the development of this market
Europe play important roles in global market, with market size of 2791 million USD in 2018 and will be 3741 million USD in 2026, with a CAGR of 3.46%.
