Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is a chemical wood preservative containing chromium, copper and arsenic. CCA is used in pressure treated wood to protect wood from rotting due to insects and microbial agents. Effective December 31, 2003, no wood manufacturer may treat wood with CCA for residential uses, with certain exceptions.

Compared with the global market, South America market of CCA is relatively small as there are few companies in the regions producing the product. The region needs imports to cater to its demand. The consumption volume of CCA in South America was about 860 MT, which only accounted for 5% consumption share worldwide.

In the region, Brazil holds a dominant place as the country shares more than 40% in the consumption market each year. The followers are Argentina and Chile, which owns about 30% demand share.

The market size of CCA in South America was valued at 3.79 million USD in the year of 2016. With the emerging of substitutes, such as ACQ, Copper Azole as well as other green wood preservatives, the South American CCA market will be impacted, keeping consistent with the global market. However, market insiders persist that CCA still has a certain market potential and it will not be phased out quickly, after all, pressure treated wood with CCA is still welcomed by customers in some extent.
