Positron-emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear medicine functional imaging technique that is used to observe metabolic processes in the body. The system detects pairs of gamma rays emitted indirectly by a positron-emitting radionuclide (tracer), which is introduced into the body on a biologically active molecule. Three-dimensional images of tracer concentration within the body are then constructed by computer analysis. In modern PET-CT scanners, three-dimensional imaging is often accomplished with the aid of a CT X-ray scan performed on the patient during the same session, in the same machine.

With the increasing high rate of cancers, demand of diagnostic equipment is surging around the world. According to the newest report< Global Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scanners Market Research Report 2017> published by QYResearch, the global PET scanners was flourishing during the past period of 2012-2016, with the CAGR of 1.59%. The top three manufacturers, GE, Siemens Healthcare, Philips Healthcare, abbreviated as ‘GPS’, highly monopolize the market. The following chart shows the production share of ‘GPS’.

As for the type of PET scanners, it can divided as PET-CT type as well as PET-MR. Nearly 98% PET scanners are PET-CT scanners. PET-MR scanners can only be provided by GE and Simens.

Although the PET scanners are dominated by the three giants, other companies are trying to breaking through the technology barriers and bring their products to the customers.

QYResearch estimates that stimulated by the high demand of PET scanners, the market is anticipated to be worthy of 1068.42 million USD in 2022.
