Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) is a compact metal encapsulated switchgear consisting of high-voltage components such as circuit-breakers and disconnectors, which can be safely operated in confined spaces. GIS is used where space is limited, for example, extensions, in city buildings, on roofs, on offshore platforms, industrial plants and hydro power plants.

A gas-insulated switch gear composed of a combination of a plurality of gas-insulated equipment, including a plurality of vertically mounted disconnecting switches having outlet sections located at respective upper and lower sides of the switches, main buses and an output bus connected across the lower output sections of the disconnecting switches, and a circuit breaker horizontally mounted beneath the main buses and coupled to the upper output sections of the disconnecting switches.

A gas insulated switchgear which uses an SF₆ substitute gas as an insulating gas and thus causes reduced environmental load while achieving high dielectric strength and excellent interrupting performance.
